Actor George Clooney stubbornly issued a response to former President Donald Trump after the former president maintained that the entertainer should abandon politics to focus on his career as an entertainer again.

“I will if he does,” Clooney said about Trump during a Tuesday interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Clooney, a top Democrat fundraiser, forced himself into the political scene when he agreed to be one of Joe Biden’s celebrity campaigners, alongside actress Julia Roberts. However, he seemingly walked back his endorsement soon after as the actor later published an op-ed in The New York Times where he called on Biden to drop out of the presidential race after his disastrous debate performance.

“Was he tired? Yes. A cold? Maybe. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw. We’re all so terrified by the prospect of a second Trump term that we’ve opted to ignore every warning sign,” Clooney wrote.

“I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as president. I consider him a friend and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals,” he added. “In the last four years, he’s won many of the battles he’s faced.”

“But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can,” Clooney continued.

Following Clooney’s opinion piece, Trump commented on the actor’s change of heart, stating “He’s turned on Crooked Joe like the rats they both are. What does Clooney know about anything?”

During Clooney’s Tuesday appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel,” Kimmel began the segment by arguing that Clooney’s op-ed “[changed] the world.”

“It had an enormous impact on the presidential election,” the host claimed.

Kimmel continued, reading Trump’s social media post aloud, “[Reading in Trump’s voice] Clooney should get out of politics and go back to television,” to which Clooney responded “I will if he does,” which received a loud roar of applause from the live crowd.

“That’s a trade-off I’d do,” Clooney continued.

The Trump segment ended with Kimmel playfully asking Clooney if he’d write another op-ed asking Trump to step down since “because it worked once, why not try it again?” to which Clooney responded “He’s a big fan of mine.”

Later, Clooney continued to praise Biden for dropping out, arguing, “The bottom line is it’s very hard to let go of power, and President Biden did something really extraordinary. Honestly, I really do think [that’s] what should be focused on.”

Clooney also joked that his interjection into the U.S. political landscape “could’ve gone very badly.” “It could still go badly,” he added.
