United States Senator Bernie Sanders declared that he is seeking a fourth term in the Senate, a move that could secure the longstanding socialist senator’s place in the upper chamber for the foreseeable future.

On Monday, Sanders (I-Vt.) announced that he would run for a fourth term in office, referring to the forthcoming election as “the most important national election in our lifetimes.”
Sanders, the Vermont-based politician, is second-oldest candidate in the Senate at the age of 82. Only Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is older than Sanders and several lawmakers in his age group have already announced their plans to depart.
After a possible fourth term, he would be in his late 80s if re-elected.
“This is the most important national election in our lifetimes,” Sanders declared in a statement. “We must fight to make sure that we remain a democracy, not an authoritarian society. We must fight to make sure that we have a government which represents the working families of our country, not the billionaire class and wealthy campaign contributors. We must fight to make sure that women can control their own bodies, and that we save the planet from the ravages of climate change. The stakes are enormous. This is an election we must not lose.”
Sanders will most likely remain in his position for the foreseeable future. All three of the Senate races that the self-described “Democratic socialist” has entered have been easily won, including one in 2018 by a 40-point margin.
The Independent candidate has been in public service for more than 40 years. In addition to serving three terms in the upper house, Sanders also served eight terms in the House and presided over Burlington, Vermont, as its mayor for most of the 1980s.
His organization has long-attracted many supporters, including members of the House “Squad,” while Sanders has continued to show contempt for the country’s billionaires and highest incomes.
However, according to Forbes, “Sanders made $2.5 million between 2011 and 2023 from book advances and royalties alone. Sanders either wrote or republished six books over the period: ‘It’s Okay to Be Angry About Capitalism,’ Crown Books, 2023; ‘Where We Go From Here: Two Years in the Resistance,’ Gale, 2018; ‘Bernie Sanders Guide to Political Revolution,’ Henry Holt and Company, 2017; ‘Our Revolution: A Future to Believe In,’ Thomas Dunne Books, 2016; ‘The Speech: A Historic Filibuster on Corporate Greed and the Decline of our Middle Class,’ Bold Type Books, 2015; and ‘Outsider in the White House,’ Verso Books, 2015.”
As one of the foremost critics of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s management of the conflict in Gaza, Sanders has gained prominence in recent months. He has repeatedly demanded that Congress and the Biden administration halt funding for what he refers to as “Netanyahu’s war machine.” He also highlighted the funds granted for Israel when he voted against the $95 billion foreign aid package last month.
“U.S. taxpayers should not be providing billions more to the extremist Netanyahu government to continue its devastating war against the Palestinian people,” Sanders said in a previous announcement.
