According to The Wall Street Journal, Waltz (R-Fla.) was offered the national security advisor role as he has been one of Trump’s most visible surrogates during the 2024 campaign, spearheading military outreach and assisting the Veterans For Trump coalition.

Waltz is also the first retired Green Beret to serve in Congress.

The congressman has administration experience as a policy adviser to former Defense Secretaries Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates.

Additionally, he is the second House lawmaker to be selected for the Trump administration after House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), accepted Trump’s nomination to be ambassador to the United Nations (UN) earlier on Monday.

Both Waltz and Stefanik are members of the House Armed Services Committee and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
