On Monday, CNN chief executive Mark Thompson confirmed Wallace’s departure.

“Chris Wallace is one of the most respected political journalists in the news business with a unique track record across radio, print, broadcast television, cable television and streaming,” CNN CEO Mark Thompson said. “We want to thank him for the dedication and wisdom he’s brought to all his work at CNN and to wish him the very best for the future.”

Wallace spoke with The Daily Beast and said “this is the first time in 55 years I’ve been between jobs. I am actually excited and liberated by that.” He also told them he wants to go independent into streaming or podcasting.

The Ankler announced last month that Wallace was offered a contract extension with CNN for “significantly less than the $8.5 million pact he inked under former CNN boss Jeff Zucker.”

Wallace began working for CNN in 2022 as a member of CNN+, the network’s doomed streaming service. Wallace continued to work for CNN+ after the network’s demise, hosting two distinct weekend talk shows, “Who’s Talking with Chris Wallace?” and “The Chris Wallace Show,” both of which attracted low viewership.

“The Chris Wallace Show” only averaged 85,000 viewers in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 demographic during the year of the presidential election, and it was unable to reach 600,000 viewers overall.

He hosted “Fox News Sunday” for 18 years prior to CNN.

Wallace is expected to appear on CNN until the end of the year.
