A new report suggests that Chinese hackers tried to break into the cellphones of former President Donald Trump and running mate Senator JD Vance by compromising telecommunications systems, according to national security sources.

The Trump campaign was informed earlier this week that the phone numbers of Trump and Vance were breached, The New York Times reported.

The hacking campaign targeted Verizon and gained access to data or messages sent by Trump, and Vance, sources claimed.

Meanwhile, investigators are trying to find out if any data was taken during the hack of phones used by politicians and government employees.

Additionally, the U.S. security officials uncovered the exact phone numbers targeted after learning earlier this year that a China-linked hacking group, Salt Typhoon, had infiltrated U.S. telecoms systems.

Trump is considered a regular cell phone user, and frequently drops public hints about the high profile people he has been in contact with.

Earlier this week, Trump had a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The 45th president is known for speaking on Russian hacking during his 2016 campaign when he said: “Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing, I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

According to former Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Russians began spearfishing attacks targeting Clinton-associated email addresses around that time.

That election would feature a series of hacked disclosures posted on WikiLeaks.
