Marc Benioff, the owner of Time Magazine, recently criticized Democrat nominee Kamala Harris on social media for her refusal to take an interview with the publication, which has been a “conventional norm” for presidential candidates to take part in throughout the years.

“Despite multiple requests, TIME has not been granted an interview with Kamala Harris – unlike every other Presidential candidate,” Benioff posted to X.

“We believe in transparency and publish each interview in full. Why isn’t the Vice President engaging with the public on the same level? #TrustMatters #TransparencyMatters #Leadership,” Benioff continued, linking the full transcript interviews TIME did with presidential candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden a few months back, prior to Biden dropping out.

TIME recently published an article titled “What Kind of President Would Kamala Harris Be?,” Which largely praised her and her short list of campaign proposals. However, the piece also critiqued Harris as well, highlighting her unwillingness to join in any interviews for the article, which is untypical of presidential candidates.

Since Harris refused to be interviewed, “TIME [instead] spoke with 20 current and former Harris campaign advisers, former aides in her vice presidential and Senate offices, senior officials from each of the past five presidential administrations, and a range of policy experts,” to craft its narrative surrounding her.

Although the article was mostly sympathetic and accommodating towards Harris, writer Charlotte Alter did include the view of one Independent voter, Rodrigo Lopez, who expressed skepticism in regards to Harris’s lack of transparency on flip-flopped policy changes, largely due to her lack of formal long-form interviews.

“Yet she has skirted the thorough accounting of her policy evolution that Lopez is seeking, in part by speaking infrequently to reporters. When she does do interviews, she mostly favors local media, culture podcasts, or friendly talk shows,” Alter wrote.

“Harris declined repeated requests for an interview for this story. In contrast, Trump talked about his policy vision with a TIME reporter for 90 minutes across two interviews. Biden spoke to TIME at similar length before dropping out of the race,” she added.

The left-wing publication has been known for its anti-Trump coverage over the years, making her interview refusal even more perplexing, as many have questioned why she would back out of a likely puff piece.

Additionally, the article did acknowledge that Harris does not present a major shift from the currently unpopular Joe Biden administration, and likens a possible Harris-led administration to an “IOS upgrade.”

“You can imagine the Harris presidency as an IOS upgrade of the current Administration: the operating system would stay the same, but with new features and better packaging. There are tonal differences between the two: Harris talks more– and more comfortably– about abortion rights than Biden ever did, speaks with more empathy about the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, and has put housing and small businesses at the center of her plans for strengthening the middle class,” Alter continued. “But for the most part, allies and critics agree there is little evident policy daylight between the Democratic nominee and the President she replaced atop the party’s ticket this summer.”
