On Tuesday morning, Raquel Zick, a spokesperson for the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office, posted on X that a suspect had been detained in connection to the explosion.

“Subject who is detained is an adult male. Explosion was from an intentionally set improvised explosive device,” Zick said.

Zick said that the incident occurred at 8:48 a.m. at the Santa Maria Courthouse.

Authorities have urged residents to stay away from the area, saying it had not yet been deemed safe.

“We have two reports of non-life-threatening injuries. One person of interest was detained immediately. Scene remains active. Please continue to avoid the area,” Zick wrote.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s (D-Calif.) office said it is “actively monitoring the explosion” and coordinating with law enforcement.

The courthouse is the same location where Michael Jackson faced trial and was acquitted of child abuse charges nearly two decades ago.
