On Saturday, Gabriella Cairo started feeling sick while she waited to board an ITA Airways flight to Rome.

The 57-year-old refused to seek any medical help since she was eager to get home to see her husband and her three sons.

When the flight attendant finally got on the plane, her condition worsened rapidly and she died just a few moments later in front of the other individuals on the plane.

All passengers on the aircraft were forced to disembark as first responders rushed on board.

Paramedics tried reviving Cairo but she was ultimately pronounced dead.

Her cause of death has been reported as a “sudden illness.”

The ITA flight had been delayed until the evening and other flights out of the Reggio Calabria Airport were also delayed.

The Mayor of Sabaudia, where Cairo lived with her family, made a statement after the tragic passing.

“I knew Gabriella. She was a bright, always smiling, and kind woman,” Mayor Alberto Mosca said. “On behalf of the administration and the entire community, I extend our heartfelt condolences to her husband and her beloved three children.”
