In his federal January 6th case, Special Counsel Jack Smith decided to issue another superseding indictment against former President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

The “trimmed down” indictment follows the Supreme Court’s July ruling that presidents are immune from prosecution for “official acts,” which essentially supported Trump.

According to the office of the special counsel, it “reflects the Government’s efforts to respect and implement the Supreme Court’s holdings and remand instructions.”

He also claims that the most recent indictment “was presented to a new grand jury that had not previously heard evidence in this case.”

Last August, Trump was accused of conspiring to defraud the United States, attempting to impede an official procedure, blocking an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

The superseding indictment retains the same counts, but it is trimmed down from the original to take the Supreme Court’s decision into consideration.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and entered a not guilty plea to the accusations.

His federal January 6th case, one of four criminal cases filed against the former president, was also sent to a trial court to be considered following the stunning Supreme Court ruling earlier this year.

Allegations regarding Trump’s alleged attempts to pressure the Justice Department—and specifically Jeffrey Clark—to support assertions that the election was rigged have interestingly been removed from the amended indictment.

The alterations seem to be an attempt to adhere to the Supreme Court’s decision, which declared that Trump could not face charges related to his contacts with Justice Department employees.

In a Truth Social post, Trump referred to the accusations against him as “ridiculous” and stated that it “should be dismissed IMMEDIATELY.”
