The chief of emergency services and firefighters, Victor Hugo Roldan, told the press that at least five individuals are now dead after a 500,000-liter tank exploded at Jose Cuervo’s tequila plant.

“The Jalisco Institute of Forensic Sciences is already here to do their expert report,” he told journalists.

The civil protection unit in western Jalisco noted the two other injured people as well.

The cause of the explosion is currently unknown.

However, the company stated that the explosion occurred during maintenance work.

Authorities say that an explosion in one tank had triggered a fire in three others, according to a statement from emergency services. 50 firefighters quickly arrived the scene after being alerted, in addition to the company’s internal civil protection team.

Soon after, residents who live near the plant were evacuated temporarily, but they were reportedly able to return to their homes just a few hours later.
