45th President Donald J. Trump says that North Dakota GOP Governor Doug Burgum’s signing off on one of the strictest abortion bans in the country is an “issue.”

Trump made this remark during an interview while he was discussing his top vice president contenders on Wednesday.

Burgum (R-N.D.) signed a near-total ban last year which outlawed all abortions that do not put the mother’s life at serious risk. In addition to if the mother’s life is in danger, only cases of rape or incest are permitted, but only up to six weeks.

Trump called this a “very strong stance” that both Burgum and North Dakota has taken.

“You know, I think Doug is great, but it is a, a strong – he’s taken a very strong stance, or the state has. I don’t know if it’s Doug, but the state has. So it’s an issue,” Trump said.

Burgum appears on Trump’s vice president shortlist. The list also includes Senators Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and J.D. Vance (R-Ohio).

Trump is expected to announce his running mate at the Republican National Convention (RNC) next week.
