United States Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is seeking to impeach conservative U.S. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.

On Wednesday, AOC’s office introduced articles of impeachment for the Justices.

For an official to be removed, the House must vote to impeach them and the Senate must vote to convict. Due to the process, the ongoing effort was described as “pointless,” since the House of Representatives is Republican-controlled.

Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement that Thomas and Alito’s “pattern of refusal to recuse from consequential matters before the court in which they hold widely documented financial and personal entanglements constitutes a grave threat to American rule of law.”

A number of congressional Democrats have also accused both Alito and Thomas of ethical lapses.

Following allegations that Thomas neglected to declare accepting travel and accommodations from a wealthy benefactor and that his wife was engaged in attempts to reverse Trump’s 2020 election defeat, activists denounced him. Thomas has stated that he did not consider the travel he took to be subject to disclosure laws because it was personal hospitality.

Alito also came under fire after it was revealed that Trump’s attempts to void the 2020 election had flags flown outside the justices’s homes in Virginia and New Jersey. According to Alito, his wife flew the flags, not him.
