Elon Musk recently commented on a bill highlighted by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson that seeks to guarantee only citizens of the United States can cast ballots in federal elections.

The SAVE Act “legislation would amend the 1993 National Voter Registration Act, better known as the ‘motor voter law,’ to require that states obtain documentary proof of citizenship from someone before he or she may register to vote. It also would require states to remove noncitizens from existing voter rolls,” The Daily Signal outlet reported.
“Speaker Johnson, Congressman Chip Roy (Texas), and Senator Mike Lee (Utah) held a press conference to announce the introduction of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. Amid the worst border crisis in American history…” according to Johnson’s official website.
SAVE Act co-sponsors include Sens. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.), John Kennedy (R-LA.), and Rick Scott (R-Fla.).
Musk called out opponents of the legislation as “TRAITORS” and raised the hypothetical question of what the penalty for treason in the United States is.
“Those who oppose this are traitors. All Caps: TRAITORS,” he stated. “What is the penalty for traitors again?”
According to the U.S. Constitution, treasonous individuals must either be executed or serve a minimum of five years in jail. They will also never be allowed to hold office in the United States, and they will be fined at least $10,000.
On Monday, Congress is anticipated to reconvene in Washington, D.C.
The vote’s timing this month is noteworthy because it occurs less than six months before Trump and President Biden take part in their rematch election for the White House.
Meanwhile, Democrat opponents of the SAVE Act argue that since it is “already unlawful for noncitizens to cast ballots in federal elections,” the legislation is not needed.
