The FBI raided the home of Oakland Democrat Mayor Sheng Thao on Thursday morning, according to multiple sources.

Agents served warrants at Thao’s home on Maiden Lane in the city’s Lincoln Highlands neighborhood at around 5:30 a.m. PST.

In an emailed statement to CBS News Bay Area, the FBI announced: “The FBI is conducting court authorized law enforcement activity on Maiden Lane. We are unable to provide additional information at this time.”

Just after 10 a.m., multiple FBI agents emerged from the home carrying boxes as news crews set up outside the residence across the street.

Meanwhile, it is still unclear what the agents were searching for or what was seized. The Department of Justice confirmed that federal agents were at Thao’s home, but declined to comment further.

The raid comes as the mayor is facing a recall vote in November after residents were able to collect enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.

The Oakland mayor has also faced heavy scrutiny for the city’s crime rates and the departure of the Oakland Athletics baseball team.
