Quarterly data from 2023 shows violent crime, especially homicides, have dropped near its lowest level in 50 years. The data is complex, however, as most states have seen serious increases in crime since the coronavirus pandemic.

Baltimore, for example, wrapped up 2023 with a major 21% drop in homicides, only after recording the highest murder per capita and robbery rates in 2022.

Data from SafeHome analysts showed property crimes rose 7% nationwide between 2021 and 2022, while motor vehicle thefts rose by 11%.

Violent crime is one of the key issues heading into the 2024 presidential election, especially amid the broken border.

Biden acknowledged there’s work to be done by pushing his latest bipartisan border bill.

“This bill would save lives, bring order to the border,” he said. “It has the funds that many of our cities badly need as well. It would also give me as president or any other president temporary authority to shut down the border when a number of immigrants is overwhelming, if you regain control of the border.”

Republicans argue that Biden already has the authority to shut down the border.

Data from Customs and Border Protection showed that from May 2023 to December 31st, the Department of Homeland Security returned a record 472,000 immigrants who crossed the border.

GOP lawmakers question why a certain number of migrants would be needed to take action, considering the border is already out of control as thousands of Americans continue to die from fentanyl.

Ultimately, Biden needs to find common ground with Republicans and stop blaming their disagreements on political games if he wants a border bill to hit the House floor.
