Anand Sujith Henry, 37, allegedly killed his sons along with fatally shooting his wife, Alice Berzinger, in a bathtub before turning the gun on himself.
According to the San Mateo Police Department, the couple was found with gunshot wounds next to a 9mm pistol and a loaded magazine in the bathroom.
Authorities are now treating the case as a murder-suicide. Early reports falsely claimed that the family had died from being poisoned by gas.
A cause of death for the twins has not yet been determined, but authorities believe that the boys were either smothered, strangled for a short time, or given a lethal overdose of something since there were no noticeable signs of trauma. Nevertheless, an investigation is currently being conducted.
Additionally, a motive for the death has not been determined, as the investigation is still ongoing.
“Based on the information we have at this time, this appears to be an isolated incident with no danger to the public, as we are confident the person responsible was located within the home,” San Mateo police said in a statement, noting there was no sign of forced entry.
“This investigation continues as detectives work to gather evidence, speak to witnesses and family members and determine a possible motive.”
In the past, police had reportedly received calls prior to the most recent incident, however, authorities would not indicate what the calls were regarding.
According to court records, Henry, who was a former software engineering manager at both Meta and Google, filed for divorce from Benizinger in December 2016. However, the divorce never materialized, and the couple moved in to the San Mateo home in 2020, where they would go on to raise their two children.
