On Friday, pro-Palestinian protesters climbed on the tree, carrying Palestinian flags and a sign that read “No Christmas as Usual in a Genocide.”

When Union Square was crowded with people, protesters then took to the ice skating rink, forcing it to close for several hours at a time.

Numerous demonstrators were taken into custody by San Francisco police for offenses ranging from felony vandalism to assault.

One officer reported that he was hit in the head by something.

The San Francisco Department of Emergency Management sent a notice on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, at 4:09 p.m. that the public was asked to stay away from the area due to police activity.

They then made an update at around 5:30 p.m. that the issue had been resolved.
