X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, recently launched new features allowing users to make video and audio calls with one another.

On Wednesday, Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla, made a statement on X announcing that the social media platform officially launched additional features, revealing the “early version” of audio and video calling features on X.

Now, X users will have the ability to call each other via audio and video calls on the platform.

However, the launch of these new features do not come as a complete surprise to users, as CEO Linda Yaccarino previously verified in August that video chat features would be on the way for users. She did not specify exactly when the new features would be launching, but added that it would be part of the process of transforming the site into an “everything app.”

This addition marks the most recent step taken in X’s development.

Some X users became aware of the newly released features under the direct message section of the app, sending users a notification saying “Audio and video calls are here!”

There was no formal statement posted on X regarding the new features, however, the company seemed to tease the new features with a cryptic post, saying “ready for it…?” on Wednesday, shortly before the updates started to appear.

X representatives stated that users can “take messaging to the next level” by initiating an audio or video chat and determining whether they would like to allow audio and video chats from certain people in their contacts, including those who they follow, or confirmed users.

However, it remains unknown whether the newly added features will be available to all users or specifically those with an X Premium membership.

When X initially declared that the updated features would be coming, Musk explained that the updates would work on iOS, Android, Mac, and PC, adding that a “phone number will not be needed.” He also characterized the features as converting the platform into “the effective global address book.”

Musk has altered the features of the social networking site several times since purchasing it a year ago.

Musk said during the summer that he was working on a premium Blue membership plan that would provide Blue subscribers exclusive access to the Tweet Deck function, and that users would eventually no longer be able to ban accounts unless they had the membership.
