Classified records that were in Biden’s possession while he was Vice President have been discovered while clearing out his old office space.
Attorney General Merrick Garland has assigned the classified documents that were found to be reviewed by the U.S. attorney in Chicago.
The documents were uncovered from a locked closet while preparing to vacate an office space at the Penn Biden Center. Biden used the office from mid-2017 up until he began his 2020 presidential campaign. According to Richard Saubel, the special counsel to the White House, a small number of documents with classified markings were discovered by the president’s personal attorneys on November 2nd.
“The documents were not the subject of any previous request or inquiry by the Archives,” Saubel said. “Since that discovery, the President’s personal attorneys have cooperated with the Archives and the Department of Justice in process to ensure that any Obama-Biden Administration records are appropriately in the possession of the Archives.”
Biden condemned former President Trump as “totally irresponsible” last year after FBI agents seized approximately 300 classified documents from his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.
“How that could possibly happen? How anyone could be that irresponsible? And I thought what data was in there that would maybe compromise sources and methods?” the president said in a 60 Minutes interview.
Under the Presidential Records Act, all documents from a president’s administration and staff must be turned over to the National Archives.
45h President Donald J. Trump took to Truth Social on Monday to condemn the president.
“When is the FBI going to raid the many homes of Joe Biden, perhaps even the White House?” Trump wrote. “These documents were definitely not declassified.”
