Police in India have arrested nine people who they believe to be connected with the Morbi bridge collapse. The nine arrests include ticketing clerks, managerial staff and three security guards who failed to regulate the number of people on the bridge.
Search and rescue efforts continue in India following the pedestrian bridge collapse which left at least 140 people dead. Crews continue to comb the waters below the bridge in Gujarat, India, in search of more fatalities. At the time of the collapse on Sunday, 400-people, many of them school-aged children, were on the bridge.
Authorities say many on the bridge were either enjoying the Diwali holiday or were migrant workers attending a Hindu festival.
The bridge was closed for six months for repairs. It reopened just four days before the tragic incident without a ‘fitness certificate’ or the authorities permission.
