GOP Female Faces Pro-Abortion Attacks as She Goes Into Labor

Democrats combating Republican Ohio congressional candidate Madison Gesiotto Gilbert have not shied away from pro-abortion rhetoric and attacks—even as she gave birth to her first son this week.

“Marcus and I are excited to announce that we welcomed our baby boy, Marcus Jr., into the world earlier this week,” Gilbert, the GOP nominee in Ohio’s open 13th Congressional District, shared on Tuesday morning. In a later tweet, she shared a photo of the new baby boy.

“Marcus Jr. is healthy and we are all doing great! A heartfelt thank you to all of our family and friends who have been so supportive throughout our pregnancy,” she added.

The Republican female’s pregnancy and newborn baby had not stopped her opponents from slamming her stance against abortion.

“House Democrats and Emilia Sykes have hit a new low attacking a new mother,” Tyler Q. Houlton, spokesman for the Republican’s campaign, told The Daily Signal. “Democrats will do anything to distract Ohioans from their failed economic agenda and soft-on-crime policies.”

In an ad released Monday, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee slams Gilbert for supporting pro-life laws, drawing on the horrific story of a 10-year-old girl who was reportedly raped before an Indiana doctor reportedly aborted the girl’s baby.

“It’s the worst thing imaginable, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen,” the ad says, showing pictures of little girls while somber music plays. “When a 10-year-old was raped and needed abortion care, Ohio wouldn’t allow it, because extremists like Madison Gesiotto Gilbert supported Ohio’s ban that criminalized abortions — even in the case of rape or incest.”

The Ohio Democratic Party also sent out mailers reviewed by The Daily Signal that attacked Gesiotto Gilbert for celebrating the overturn of Roe v. Wade as “amazing news.” The mailers call her “extreme” and accuse her of harboring a “dangerously backward agenda” (sourcing almost entirely CNN and Twitter).

“Reminder,” Democratic Ohio state Rep. Emilia Sykes said of her opponent on Monday, “my opponent said the Dobbs decision was ‘one of the greatest legal and moral wins/corrections in the history of the United States.’ She is anti-choice and wants to continue to erase 50 years of established legal precedent.”

On her campaign website, Sykes insists, “Women should always have the right to make decisions about their healthcare and reproductive freedom.”

“In Congress, Emilia will fight against any attempts to criminalize abortion and contraception or punish women and will stand up for victims of rape, incest, and domestic abuse,” the website adds. She did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Signal.
